How to Simplify Fractions?
To simplify a fraction, find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number), then divide both numbers by the GCD.
Step 1: Find the GCD of 8 and 12:
$$ \text{GCD = } 4 $$
Step 2: Divide both the numerator and denominator by GCD (4).
$$ 8 \div 4 \text{ = } 2 $$
$$ 12 \div 4 \text{ = } 3 $$
Result:
$$ \dfrac{8}{12} = \dfrac{2}{3} $$
Step 1: Save the whole number for later and find the GCD of 2 and 8:
$$ \text{GCD = } 2 $$
Step 2: Divide both the numerator and denominator by GCD (2).
$$ 2 \div 2 \text{ = } 1 $$
$$ 8 \div 2 \text{ = } 4 $$
Result: Add the whole number at the beginning and obtain your result.
$$ 3 \dfrac{2}{8} = 3 \dfrac{1}{4} $$
Simple fraction
If you want to convert a mixed fraction to a simplified fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator and then add the result to the numerator.
$$ 3 \times 4 + 1 = 13 $$
