How to use this calculator?
- Enter the Total Distance in the chosen unit (e.g. miles).
- Enter the Total Time in hh:mm:ss format (e.g. 01:30:00 for 1,5 hour).
- Get your results from the Average Speed field. If needed, adjust the speed unit.
How to calculate Average Speed?
Divide the Total Distance by the Total Time expressed in the appropriate units.Average Speed [mph] = Total Distance [miles] / Total Time [hours]
Example: Calculate the average speed of a vehicle that traveled 140 miles in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 15 seconds.
First, let's convert the time to hours:
30 minutes = 0.5 hours
15 seconds = 15/3600 hours
Total Time = 2 hours + 0.5 hours + (15/3600) hours
Total Time ≈ 2.50417 hours (rounded to five decimal places)
Now we can calculate the average speed:
Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time
Average Speed ≈ 140 miles / 2.50417 hours
Average Speed ≈ 55.94 mph (rounded to two decimal places)
The average speed of the vehicle is approximately 55.94 miles per hour.
